The root of all Evil?
A few brief thoughts on the BBC documentary by Richard Dawkins on The root of all Evil?.Richard Dawkins wrote with The Selfish Gene a masterpiece. I can only recomend this book to anyone who, as Dawkins would say, thinks of him/herself as a thinking person. I was enlightened by John Cummings who gave me this book as a present. Recently I also read The Ancestor's Tale, which I find very interesting but not quiet as groundbreaking as The Selfish Gene.
But back to the topic. My wife and I had the chance to watch the documentary a few days ago. Realy worth the time, even tough the confrontational nature of the interviews remind me more of Michael Moore than the Dawkins I know from the books. Now, leaving the question of if religion, faith or science is the root of all evil to those who want to polarize, I would like to post a few rules I hope to keep editing years into the future on how I think rational persons would manage to live together in MyWorld. I would like to sugest these as moral values of MyWorld, which are not part of or inspired by any religion.

Ordered by importance/adherence:
- The main goal is the long term survival of humans. No humans may be harmed. Humans are defined as a born being of the species Homo sapiens.
- Freedom of each human being ends where it hurts the freedom of another human being.
- All humans have to live in tolerance. Religion, race or sex has to be tolerated.
- Freedom of speach/thought has to be guaranteed. Tolerance requires moderation but not censorship.

I have always wondered what people mean by that sentence – it sounds pretty simple and convincing, but who defines when freedom is hurt? For example if I feel like deleting your homepage, I am sure you would prevent me from doing it (which is ok, I guess – it IS a nice homepage after all

yes you are completely right, this is a greater philosophical question. It is up to each society to decide (hopefully by democracy) where each ones freedom ends. All I am trying to figure out for myself is what values would be those crucial for a society to live in peace with itself and with other societies.
Now, to follow your example for the sake of it: I am in no way forcing you to like my homepage, nor am I forcing you to read its content, nor am I forcing you to type http://www.elkin.de into your browser. As of this, I am in no way hurting your freedom. Take my 4th rule and you will know what I mean.

Hola Elkin, hola Laima. En lugar de escribir una mail donde pido noticias sobre Vuestra vida, he decidido dar una vuelta en Vuestro espacio M&M. He encontrado este rincón filosófico y dejo aquí un saludo y una consideración.
Que la libertad individual termine donde empieza la libertad de otro es un antiguo principio que me parece genial. Como todas las reglas constitucionales de Elkinland, por cierto. Pero, no sería suficiente un solo principio: que cada uno respete los demás. Si cada ser humano respetase a todo ser humano (y ya que ha empezado bien, se propusiera respetar tb su entorno), respetaría su libertad, su raza, su sexo (y su manera de vivirlo) y su religión (si tiene una). E “yaettá” no?
Bueno, chicos, que la vida os sea leve.

Hola Alberto! Que bueno ver que nuestros amigos leen las chorradas que escribo. El problema del respeto lo estuvimos discutiendo con unos amigos hace no muchos días. Creo que por ahora se puede decir que la palabra respeto es demasiado amplia en que se puede interpretar de muchas maneras. Ejemplo: Tengo que tener respeto a todas las creencias, sean religiosas o no? O tengo que ser respetuoso del partido político que alguien manifiesta como correcto? Quiero decir que si no puedo criticar por tener que ser respetuoso me meto en el lio de no poder intercambiar opiniones.
Así que tienes mucha razón, en realidad mi punto de vista esta basado en vivir y dejar vivir, pero con la condición de: critica y acepta crítica (mientras sea constructiva). Creo que si se usa la palabra acepta en vez de respeta estaríamos definiendo mejor la situación. La regla seria: “Acepta que todo ser vivo es libre, acepta que no hay diferencias en raza, sexo o dios(es), acepta que el modo de encontrar la verdad es usando el método critico y científico.”
Que opinas?

Hola tío! Sabes… me parece que nuestra visión de las cosas (o, mejor dicho, de este asunto) sea demasiado símil para que la discusión sea verdaderaménte interesante.
Pero el punto es siempre lo mismo: What’s the meaning of “freedom”? What means “respect”?
Si te metes en debates sobre “definiciones” seguro te metes en lios. Por supuesto hay diccionarios que aiudan, a la hora de buscar definiciones. Pero siempre habrá interpretaciones diferentes del mismo concepto, porque cuando intentas definir el significado de una palabra, y cuando esta palabra expresa un concepto abstracto, siempres utilizarás palabras y, a su vez, cada palabra será objeto de interpretación… Es un perro que se muerde la cola…
De todas formas me gusta creer que el nivel de desarrollo de nuestra sociedad ya nos permite tener una ídea colectiva de algunos conceptos fundamentales, como libertad y respeto. Por eso creo que, también cuando alguien NO tiene respeto para otra persona u otra idea, igualmente sabe que es el respeto.
En este sentido no creo que la crítica sea antitética a un concepto de respeto. Por supuesto yo puedo respetar tus ideas, pero criticarlas. De misma manera está claro que la crítica no se puede definir tal cuando implique una falta de respeto hacía la persona o la idea objeto de la crítica. La crítica (también cuando no es constructiva), es una expresión de la propia libertad de pensamiento que no influye sobre la libertad de los demás. Así que puedo decir públicamente que las ideas expresadas por Fulano no son correctas, o no me gustan, sin que esto constituya una falta de respeto hacia Fulano ni hacia sus ideas. Pero si digo que Fulano es un imbecil porque tiene estas ideas, no me limito a expresar una crítica, sino que quiero ofender a Fulano Y la ofensa es una forma de violencia que, como tal, podría violar su libertad. Pues, para seguir tu ejemplo, me parece bien respetar todas las religiones y, sin faltar de respeto a las ceencias o a los que creen, puedo expresar mis críticas hacia toda religión (algo que en realidad me ocurre a menudo).
