25 September 06 - 12:26Fix bad xmltv entries
I noticed that some channels that get populated using
xmltv tend to have a generic title and the actual title of the show shows only in the subtitle. I needed to fix this, so I wrote a small SQL statement to do it.

17 September 06 - 21:54Hide without deleting a set of channels in MythTV
MythTV 0.20 is still a bitch when you need to remove channels from it. Even more so when you need to remove more than 5 channels, since both GUI options available (mythtv-setup and mythweb) are subobtimal for their own reasons, I was inclined to find a third.

10 September 06 - 18:44SVN MythTV RPMs for SuSE 10.0
After being frustrated at trying to compile Myth Plugins (base mythtv and themes worked fine) I found that the site
version6 has up-to-date 0.20 RPMs taken from SVN available for SuSE 10.0.

29 September 06 - 10:51Migrating from one hard drive to more

The last week was branded by my franatic searches for more space on my
MythTV server. Hard drive space (250G) was not enough to hold the movies I had been recording. I finaly thought it was time to get a bigger drive, but what to do with the smaller one. My goal was not to just add two drives and mount them at separate places, as this would not work with MythTV. I needed a way of "connecting" both drives such that they would look like one and I did not want to loose my 230G worth of recordings in the process.

28 September 06 - 11:38tv_grab_es_digital updated
Just because I needed it, I reworked some of the code that grabs the TV listings from plus.es and stores it into valid XMLTV data. Just copy
this script into a file named tv_grab_es_digital, chmod +x and run it.

25 September 06 - 13:37Cool your Athlon (old school)

My server runs on a rather old Athlon CPU. My experience has been, that it keeps pumping heat at 52°C even when it has no load. I remembered that in my old SuSE 9.1 days there was a tool called
athcool, that would enable more powerfull cooling of the CPU.

25 September 06 - 11:41Server crashed breaking the jfs file system
This morning I was confronted with my server having overheated and locked up in the process (or the other way round). This is usually no problem as most Linux programs cope with this very gracefully. Today, though, was different as my storage hard drive where all my MythTV recordings are saved was corrupted.

22 September 06 - 14:51Modeline for Sanyo Z1
I run my HTPC using SuSE linux. To get my video card to access the my Sanyo Z1 projector directly I needed a modeline that would make it switch to "PASS TRU" mode enabling the real 960x544 pixel ratio (16:9) without scaling. Under Linux this means that you have to edit the xorg.conf file usually in /etc/X11/

20 September 06 - 10:38Why people switch from Windows 98/2000 to Linux

I have seen Windows 98 beening switched for Linux.
Its true! As a matter of fact, it has been me who does it. As the support "specialist" for family & friends I often get asked to fix Win98/2000 PCs. Two years ago I made a cut and stopped supporting Windows. Yes, just as Microsoft did. Its not a "religious" kind of thing, its more about self protection. I noticed back then that fixing issues for these Operating Systems was not a matter of minutes as it used to be, but became a matter of hours and even days, often requiering me to reinstall OS/drivers/documents etc.
